Walk the Walk was founded by Nina Barough CBE who woke up one morning with what seemed like a fun idea to Power Walk a Marathon in decorated bras to raise money to help fight breast cancer. What makes the beginning of this story so magical is that Nina, at that time, had no experience of fundraising or taking part in a marathon - nor did she know anyone who had been affected by breast cancer.
In November 1996, 13 women Power Walked the New York City Marathon in their bras to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. What started out as a one-off fundraising event has blossomed into a thriving multi-million-pound charity, raising in excess of £121 million to date for vital breast cancer causes.
Since that time over 367,000 women, men and young Walkers have pounded the pavements at the world famous MoonWalks in London, Scotland and Iceland. Walk the Walk has granted its funds to various charities including, Breast Cancer Now, Penny Brohn UK, The Haven, Maggie’s Centres, FACT, Tenovus and The Christie. These grants help to fund research in to breast cancer and improve the lives of people living with cancer now.
Walk the Walk is also proud to have supplied 609 Scalp Cooling Machines to 214 hospitals throughout the UK giving breast cancer patients the best chance to help keep their hair whilst undergoing chemotherapy.
We are thrilled to have been part of the inspiration for such a wonderfully emotional play and there is no doubt in our minds that women will continue to be inspired and uplifted! Nina Barough CBE, Founder and Chief Executive of Walk the Walk Worldwide
